It is easier to create new tags as circumstances dictate, and one can be free to do so. In addition to allowing wiki users to view pages with a common tag together, tags are used extensively to list works according to various topics on all of the sub-namespace start pages, such as works:harn:kaldor:. A different combination of tags in each topic generates each list. At the time of this writing, they are used only in the :works: section of the wiki, and most tags therefore belong to the tag namespace works:. These conventions will expand as other uses arise. ===== Works tag conventions ===== - #All works get a publisher tag without a namespace. - #All works get a tag for their page namespace. - Link: tag_variances - #Tags are often singular where namespaces are plural. - #Works belonging to series get appropriate tags. - #Works of an emerging group get a new tag. - #Works drawn from magazines get appropriate tags. - #Magazine issues get magazine, name and name_number tags. - #Magazine articles get just name and name_number tags. - #Works get tags for all relevant realms. - #Works get any other tags that may apply. - #Composite works get tags for all parts. - #HârnMaster works get general and version tags. - #Geographical works get a tag for the type of area covered. -#Works set outside Hârn get a Kethira tag. - #Settlement works get region, realm, and hold type tags. - #Wilderness works get a sub-region tag. - #Location works set in a hold get a tag named for that hold. - #Works consisting of a map get a map tag. ==== All works get a publisher tag without a namespace ==== Every work is tagged with its publisher. This allows them to be displayed in topics on each publisher's page and also makes it possible to divide canon works from fanon in topics elsewhere. Unlike most of these tags, publisher tags belong to no tag namespace. Thus, the tag for works:publishers:cgi is simply cgi. A full listing of publisher tags is given in the Works template procedure. ==== All works get a tag for their page namespace ==== As works are organized into namespaces based on their content, they also get at least one tag for that content. These tags usually have the same name as the page namespace, but there are some exceptions. A list of tag_variances shows the instance where tags differ from page namespaces or icons. Other tricky tags are shown there too. === Tags are often singular where namespaces are plural === This may admittedly be poor design, but there are inconsistencies between page namespaces and tags, and between icons and tags. Why? Well, tags just seemed more individual. For instance, adventures are found in the works:adventures: page namespace and take the icons:adventures icon. However, each adventure is tagged with the works:adventure tag, singular. ==== Works belonging to series get appropriate tags ==== Works belonging to a series get a general works:series tag and another tag for the specific series. The latter one serves to group them together, and the former makes a handy shorthand to exclude works belonging to any series from a topic listing non-series works. <datatables buttons='["copy","csv"]' info="false" paging="false"> ^ Series tag ^ Series type ^ | works:ancestral_debt | Adventure series | | | works:captain_courageous | Thonahexus magazine column/series | | | works:common_knowledge | Standalone and Hârnlore magazine column/series | | | works:dark_rethem | Adventure series | | | works:dicey_business | Hârnlore magazine column | | | works:editorial | Hârnlore magazine column | | | works:fethael | Series developing a particular area | | | works:fff | NPCs series (Friends, Foes & Followers) | | | works:greatclans_series | Realm-crossing series stuck into Hârnic Lore | | | works:harn_pottage | Location-neutral series | | | works:harnline_report | Hârnlore magazine column | | | works:knights_of_kaldor | Adventure series | | | works:knights_series | Realm-crossing series stuck into Hârnic Lore | | | works:krazmas_forge | Thonahexus magazine column/series | | | works:letterdemain | Hârnlore magazine column | | | works:light_rethem | Adventure series | | | works:map_bundle | Location-neutral series | | | works:nelafayn | Series developing a particular area | | | works:panaga | Adventure series | | | works:penny_arcane | Hârnlore magazine column | | | works:saga_gundar_green-eye | Adventure series | | | works:stories_of_harn | Standalone and Thonahexus magazine column/series | | | works:town_cryer | Thonahexus magazine column/series | | </datatables> === Works of an emerging group get a new tag === It may be that several works that don't belong to a formal series begin to accumulate in a particular group. This seems to be the case at the time of this writing with works in the vein of :works:harnic_lore:tomes_scrolls, which have now gained the works:tomes_scrolls tag. These are not yet grouped together, so they do not get the works:series tag. Two possible series have not been considered in this way. Firstly, several :works:wilderness: works bear the subheading, "Trade Routes". They do have their own tag, works:trade, but have not been made a series. This may just be due to inertia and the fact that the Wilderness section is divided in other ways. The other one is a two-instance column in Hârnlore magazine, "Reports to Council." We've likely seen the last of these, and they are another group of cross-realm content stuck into Hârnic Lore. They have no tag and are merely alphabetized together by page name. ==== Works drawn from magazines get appropriate tags ==== === Magazine issues get magazine, name and name_number tags === Magazine issue pages, like that for works:thonahexus:thona_01, get the following tags. | works:magazine | General tag for the type of work | | | works:thonahexus | Tag for specific magazine | | | works:thonahexus_1 | Groups the page with all articles taken from the issue | | === Magazine articles get just name and name_number tags === As with magazine issues, these pages get the tag named for the magazine and the tag including the issue number. They //do not// get the general magazine tag. ==== Works get tags for all relevant realms ==== Any realm in which a work is set gets that realm's tag. It gets the tag even if it is merely near enough to the realm to be of potential interest for games set there. It gets tags for all such realms. For instance, :works:adventures:trobridge is located at the putative border between Kaldor and Tharda, so it and any other works about it get tags for both realms. Any realm even mentioned significantly should be tagged. This occasionally gets ridiculous, as in the case of works:harnmaster:pilots_almanac. ==== Works get any other tags that may apply ==== Adventures detailing a manor get a works:manor tag. If it's actually a Laranian abbey, it gets works:larani along with the abbey tag. The possibilities are endless. === Composite works get tags for all parts === Works containing several articles make an emphatic example of this. Something like :works:adventures:bognors_folly have enough different sections to compel its listing in numerous places. Old kingdom modules like :works:oop:kaldor combine realm, castle, and barbarian articles. === HârnMaster works get general and version tags === All works with HârnMaster rules content get the general works:harnmaster tag. Additionally, they should get one of the following version tags. | works:harnmaster_1 | | | works:harnmaster_2 | | | works:harnmaster_3 | | | works:harnmaster_gold | | === Geographical works get a tag for the type of area covered === Several tags describe the general type of geographical area covered by the work. These include the following. | works:world | Planetary or larger areas like Kethira or Yashain | | | works:continent | Lythia, Mernat, Kamerand, etc. | | | works:subcontinent | Venarive, Anzeloria, Santhrada, etc. | | | works:region | Hârn, Ivinia, or other areas in a regional map | | | works:realm | Kaldor, Tharda, or other polities. Great kingdoms may be categorized here or in a yet-to-be-created tag, but that issue has not yet arisen. | | | works:province | Loala is the only place this is used so far, and that may be a mistake. Shorkyne in general will strain bad taxonomies. | | | works:area | These are parts of a realm larger than a hold and is something of a catch-all. Articles like works:harn:melderyn:delwyn_hundred or works:harn:kaldor:fenlanders could fit here. | | There are other possibilities for more specific classification within a realm, but they have not been needed yet. works:domain could suit an article on a great fief like the Earldom of Balim and may be a better tag for Loala and other counties (duchies too?) in Shorkyne. On the other hand, Shorka counties are more geographically contiguous, which is an aspect of works:province, like shires or, well, Thardic provinces. works:district could be used then for hundreds. The idea here is to speak more generically about geographical space without bringing in differing governmental principles between feudal systems or republics, for instance. == Works set outside Hârn get a Kethira tag == The works:kethira tag serves as a catch-all for everything set outside of Hârn itself. There is yet little enough such material that it makes sense to group it all together. === Settlement works get region, realm, and hold type tags === Tags have been created for the regions in which current works are set, such as works:harn. Realms have tags too, like works:kaldor, as we've seen above. There are also tags describing the general type of settlement, including the following. | works:abbey | | | works:castle | | | works:city | | | works:fort | | | works:keep | | | works:location | | | works:manor | | | works:mine | | | works:ruin | | == Location works set in a hold get a tag named for that hold == Like the emerging series tags, once an article comes out about an inn in a particular city, it makes sense to create a tag named after that city. Add it to the original city article and the new location article. Other articles may expand on a canon article, and they should get such tags too. An example would be the works:namadees tag found on the pages for :works:harn:chybisa:namadees and :works:harn:chybisa:namadees_architecture. === Wilderness works get a sub-region tag === The wilderness articles are grouped together geographically as seems to suit the available material. New ones may be created if there is a burst of development in a particular area. At the time of this writing, they are organized with the following tags. | works:afarezirs | | | works:central_harn | | | works:eastern_harn | | | works:harnic_islands | | | works:northern_harn | | | works:peran | | | works:southeastern_harn | | | works:western_harn | | === Works consisting of a map get a map tag === The works:map tag is for works that are primarily a map or include a major map. By "major" is meant something more than the standard settlement maps and building floor plans that accompany most settlement articles. wiki/tags_conventions.txt Last modified: 2023/08/31 11:29by suedunham
